To survive, he invents a calamity in which the general’s achievements threaten the throne, then insists on staying at the general’s residence for safety. Though he seems to be playing at ghostly tricks, he is actually carefully protecting the general and clearing away spies and dangers. Once the turmoil at court subsides, Qiao Ji, feeling guilty, tries to flee in the middle of the night, only for Meng Xulin to hunt him down across the entire city. The cold-faced killer grabs him and confesses through clenched teeth: You helped me through my calamity, so now you have to take responsibility for the rest of my life.
