The rules for the Beast Taming Tournament were overhauled. Beast Tamers could now implant mechanical parts to modify their bodies, and mechanical-type Phantom Beasts were also eligible to compete. After three years of working her tail off as a support, Yaoling was kicked off her team and lost her shot at becoming a tournament legend
"As if!!!"
"I curse you traitors who abandoned your teammates! May you never raise your academy's flag over the Cloud Palace. May the mechanical parts you implant spark and explode, blasting you all away in a fight. May the mechanical Phantom Beasts you contract never obey your commands..."
Yaoling glowered at her former teammates as they walked away, wiped off the tears she'd struggled to squeeze out, then turned around and picked up a team registration form.
The next day, a recruitment post appeared on the Vermilion Bird Academy forum.
[Teammates Wanted]
Seeking two teammates. Training-path guidance and relevant skill books provided. Applicants must meet any two of the following conditions.
1. Your contracted beast is grass-type, and you're open to changing its training path from main healer to a combined poison-and-support role.
2. Your contracted beast is water-type and has both support and healing paths. It can learn the skills "Water Mirror Refraction" and "Damp Domain."
3. The Beast Tamer is not in a good mental state.
Everyone at the academy: ?
-
This is a world where Phantom Beasts and humans live in harmony. Humans recognized by Phantom Beasts and chosen to form contracts with them are known as "Beast Tamers."
The Beast Taming Tournament is held every four years. Teams that want to compete must challenge the "Flag Points" located in different regions in succession over the four years, winning flags to earn hard-won points.
Only the top one hundred teams in the rankings qualify to enter the tournament venue and compete for legendary status, letting their academy's flag fly over the Cloud Palace.
At first, nobody thought a team that only started "capturing flags" in its fourth year was worth paying attention to.
But this dark horse shot up the rankings in just one year. "I Said the World Is Ending Tomorrow, Am I Right?" outdid a host of upbeat team names and claimed the top spot before the tournament began.
On opening day, the team at the top of the leaderboard entered first.
The wings of the Mysterious Radiance Phoenix blotted out the sky. The vines of the Purple-Gold Netherworld twisted like a river of blood. The Hollow Sky Cloud Ray glided silently through the mist. Surrounded by her teammates, the masked girl removed her faceplate and grinned viciously at her former teammates, who stood dumbstruck beside the stands.
"It's not my fault people hate me. If you hate me, please take a moment to consider whether there's something wrong with you first."
- Phantom Beast training + battle tournaments + regional exploration + a lighthearted comedy of everyday life that looks villainous but is truly full of bonds and love
- A veteran of the old-school, hands-on training style takes on a mechanical deus ex machina. Don't underestimate the bonds between us, you hear? (What?)
- Team lineup: Yaoling, whose contracted beast is light-type but spends every day lurking in the shadows; hatred is her fuel and motivation, and she never stops moving forward / a grass-type contracted beast, so it picked up a little clinginess too / a naturally sharp-tongued type / Yaoling's childhood sweetheart / a water-type contracted beast, so it cries a lot / a cute, cold-faced gravity-type / Yaoling's childhood friend who appeared out of nowhere / very well-raised contracted beasts
