In 2005, on Section Four of Hongxing Road in Chengdu, local boy Gui Shannan butted heads with Chongqing lad Niu Tangtang (Tang is pronounced shang).
One sold a fragrant, long-lasting yuan-yang hot pot, the other a spicy, punchy nine-grid hot pot. Both wanted to swoop in and grab a bargain as Hot Pot Garden faded from the scene and Kong Liang took over its place.
They had the same little scheme in mind, and opened their shops right next door to each other. They might as well have written on their faces, "We're rivals. We'll fight whenever we run into each other."
While the diners on the whole street eagerly waited for Chi You's mount to battle a Baopilong, Niu Tangtang had already spread his wings like a peacock in front of Gui Shannan, all while their pig brains were cooking. Riding his Baopilong, he clung to Gui Shannan and wouldn't let go.
Niu Tangtang: "What rivals? I just want to win Boss Gui's heart!"
Gui Shannan: "That idiot next door ate too much Sichuan pepper and can't even talk straight. Don't listen to his nonsense."
