Note: If you find the pacing slow at the beginning, you can skip straight to Chapter 9.
Chapter 9 is one little spoonful of jealousy.

Lin Shubai led her troops into the enemy kingdom's imperial palace and found a miserable-looking assassin in its dungeon. His martial arts had been crippled, and he was on the brink of death. A special tattoo marked his body.
Lin Shubai took a closer look at the tattoo. This was a guaranteed first-class merit!
That is, if she could interrogate the assassin and get information about his master.
The assassin was covered in injuries, and the jailers said he hadn't given up any information yet.
For someone who wouldn't crack under force, a few days of gentle persuasion would usually get results.
Lin Shubai secretly made her plans, but the assassin was determined to die.
Several times, her first-class merit had nearly slipped right through her fingers.
Lin Shubai made up her mind: whatever else happened, she would win this assassin over.
Thanks to her tireless efforts, she finally made progress, and before she knew it, she had fallen in love.
The good news: she got the information and executed the enemy on the spot.
The bad news: the assassin found out he'd been used and ran out of the general's residence, heartbroken!
Lin Shubai tried every way she could to coax him back, but couldn't. She did, however, find out why he'd run away: he'd heard she was going to marry into the imperial family and thought she would abandon him, so he'd left first.
Hearing his reason, Lin Shubai didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It was all the emperor's fault for trying to play matchmaker. Nothing had even started, but the rumor had already spread!
After she explained everything, the two of them finally made up.

Ning Xuanchen hated himself for not dying three months earlier. After suffering for three months, he'd been taken away as a prisoner of war by an enemy general. He'd thought a new round of torment was about to begin.
Instead, the general treated him wonderfully and stayed by his side day and night.
Just as he was falling for her, news of victory arrived from the capital. The general had executed his former master and was going to marry into the imperial family.
Heartbroken, Ning Xuanchen fled the general's residence alone.
The general found him and told him the marriage was all a lie.
He didn't dare reveal his feelings, but the general openly and sincerely confessed her love for him.
He chose to trust Lin Shubai one more time.
