The Consequences of Provoking the Aloof Heiress

After her mother died, she was taken in by her father's ex-wife.

It was pouring rain on moving day, as she packed up her belongings. The kind woman told her:

"You look a lot like your mother."

There was another girl in the house, just one year older than her.

She wore her hair in a high ponytail and wouldn't even look her in the eye.

Her presence was painfully awkward, and gossip flew everywhere.

After being whispered about behind her back yet again, she sensed that someone was tacitly allowing it.

She needed someone powerful in her corner, an umbrella to shelter under.

She accepted anyone who came her way, moving among one clique after another.

But the person most worth currying favor with was, of course, her stepsister.

Living under someone else's roof, she tread carefully, watching and learning what her stepsister liked.

She said, "Sis, I can give you what you want."

They pretended not to know each other in front of others, but behind closed doors, they kissed. They huddled together in the cramped space, listening to the laughter and chatter just beyond the door.

After muddying the stagnant waters and letting everything come to light, she walked away.

Everyone said her mother had been no good.

Now the past had borne the same fruit again.

She was false, selfish, and sensitive, doing everything for her own gain.

She could have gotten away unscathed, if only she hadn't provoked the wrong person.

She never thought that her stepsister would come looking for her, tug her by the clothes, and shove her into a car.

Then, putting on the air of a righteous gentleman, she said:

"It's fine. If you can't keep pretending, then stop."

"Someone has to pay the price."
