An Exiled County Magistrate Picks Up a Mute Wife [Farming]

An Mu is learned and well-read, but because she refuses to go along with corruption, she is targeted and demoted to county magistrate in a poor, remote place.

On the way to take up her post, she happens to save a girl who is trying to hang herself.

The girl's name is Xu Rou. Born mute, she is treated worse than a pig at home.

Her parents plan to sell her as a concubine to a rich landlord to raise money for her elder brother's civil service exam expenses.

Xu Rou runs away in the middle of the night and, seeing no way out, decides to jump off a cliff, only to run into An Mu passing by.

"You're going to sell your daughter anyway, so you might as well sell her to me." An Mu tosses out a silver ingot.

Xu Rou's mother bites the silver, then leaves happily.

Xu Rou stands where she is, eyes brimming with tears as she looks at the beautiful woman before her.

An Mu turns and smiles at her. "Would you like to come with me?"

Xu Rou nods with all her might.

Later, everyone gossips that the new woman magistrate has a beloved mute wife.

When An Mu handles official documents, Xu Rou grinds ink beside her.

When An Mu goes to the countryside to investigate cases, Xu Rou silently follows behind.

Someone tells An Mu that marrying a mute is beneath her.

An Mu replies languidly, "My wife warms my bed, embroiders pouches for me, and makes soup to sober me up. Can you do that?"

One day, Xu Rou learns to write and, blushing, slips her a piece of paper with three crookedly written words:

"I like you."

An Mu folds the paper and tucks it into her robe, then smiles and kisses her eyes. "What a coincidence. I like you too."
