Liang Shuijing has followed the rules for twenty-seven years. The most outrageous thing she has ever done was sleep with a college student after discovering her boyfriend's infidelity, partly out of a desire for revenge.
The younger man comes from a poor family and works his way through school. He's obedient and well-behaved, doesn't smoke or drink, and has a pretty, innocent face that looks especially pitiful when he cries.
Other than having far too much energy in one particular department, he's attentive both in and out of bed, and never asks Liang Shuijing to define their relationship.
"You don't have to fight with him for my sake." The young man's eyes are rimmed with red, his long lashes lowered as he carefully takes her hand. "I'll be fine no matter what."

Guilt finally getting the better of her, Liang Shuijing decides to cut things off cleanly and give the sweet young man a home.
That evening, her friend drags her to a nightclub for a singles' party. The summer wind rolls in like a heat wave, and outside the club she catches sight of a familiar, strikingly tall figure.
The young man leans against a silver-black Ferrari LaFerrari, smoking. He looks languid and rakish, dressed head to toe in luxury brands. Amid the flashing lights and revelry, his face is like that of a sea demon, and a silver stud on his brow glints with a cold light.
Someone calls him over for the after-party. Lai Yixiang calmly grinds out his cigarette and says it's getting late, and he needs to go home to make his sister a late-night snack.
He casually tosses his car keys from hand to hand, turns around, and locks eyes with Liang Shuijing.
