Doubles; switch
At forty-three, Zhou Zhou was in her golden years. She had money, power, and respect, and even those who disliked her had to paste on a smile in front of her.
If only she hadn't been in a car accident.
If only she hadn't died in that car accident.
She got a System. If she redeemed one person, she could go back. With all those zeros in her bank account in mind, she agreed through tears.
Then she discovered that her mission target was herself: her twenty-three-year-old self, weak, foolish, and miserable.
"I'd rather just die."
Twenty-three-year-old Zhou Zhou was having a terrible time. She was about to face her first bout of unemployment after graduating from college, her mother owed gambling debts, and she had only two thousand yuan to her name, while next month's rent was already due. She prayed to the heavens: Please let someone come kill me.
Suddenly, someone fell through her ceiling. It was a person who looked exactly like her.
She remembered a question that had recently gone viral online: "If someone exactly like you said they wanted to take your place, what would you do?"
"Are you here to take my place? Then could you burn my body and scatter me in the sea?" That was her choice. She just wanted to become ashes and drift with the currents.
The other woman glared at her. "Are you crazy, or am I? You think I'm going to take your crappy job, where you work nine to nine, six days a week, for three thousand yuan? Or take your place in that endless mess with your own mother? There's no such good deal in this world."
"I'm telling you, those are things you have to do yourself!"
"What's your wish? And don't say you want to die."
Later, she made her third wish: "I wish you would love me."
The woman who looked exactly like her gave her a disdainful glance. "Don't repeat a wish that's already come true. Is the barbecue ready? I want some. Hurry up!"
"It's ready, it's ready! Coming right up!"
They shared the same blood and the same past. They were the people who understood each other best in the world.
"Are you happy now?" the forty-three-year-old Zhou Zhou asked.
"This is the happiest day of my life!" the twenty-three-year-old Zhou Zhou replied.
She had just been accepted into the major she loved, and was on her way to the airport with her beloved.
Hearing the System's farewell in her mind, her beloved's lips curled into a faint smile.
"That's good."
One day later, she was bound in a foreign land torn apart by war, the woman's words still ringing in her ears: "You're still too naive."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
