It was supposed to be a System for raising the perfect canary.
So why did it end up bound to a dying, stray lovebird?
Little Lovebird was confused. Something seemed to have appeared inside her, and a strange voice in her head called itself the Canary System.
"Chirp, chirp!"
"I'm not a canary. I'm a parrot."
But when she understood the Canary System's mission, which was apparently to win over humans, she suddenly realized she might be the perfect bird for the job. Besides, the System said she could survive if she accepted the mission.
So she accepted.
[Mission One: Find a benefactor.]
She spread her wings and nimbly slipped into the collar of a passing woman's shirt, then nestled into a warm fold and went to sleep.
Mission complete.
[Mission Two: Make her fall in love with you.]
Little Lovebird ruffled her feathers in the woman's palm, puffing herself up into a fluffy little ball. The woman immediately covered her mouth, eyes shining, and carefully used her phone to snap pictures of every adorable moment.
Mission complete.
[Mission Three: Defeat the other canaries.]
Little Lovebird expertly pecked open her cage door, flew over to the cage next door, and gave the air beside the other parrot's head a hard peck!
The other parrot was so startled that it flapped wildly around its cage, terrified out of its wits.
Mission complete.
[Mission Four: Run away with a baby so she'll regret it.]
One day, Little Lovebird laid a tiny egg.
The woman gasped when she saw it, then helplessly picked it up. She hurriedly searched online: "What should I do if my parrot lays an egg?" Then, flustered, she prepared some water-soluble calcium supplements, muttering all the while, "It's my fault for not noticing how you were doing. What if you get egg-bound?"
Mission complete!
"Chirp! I really am a naturally gifted canary!" Little Lovebird crowed proudly.
Now she stood tall atop the highest cabinet in the room, surveying her domain. She nimbly dodged the bird toy the woman swung at her to stop her from wrecking the place, then angrily pecked the chandelier for good measure, without a care for whether there was any spot in the house she hadn't yet graced with her presence.
Her eyes fell on the furious woman below. This human had stroked her back and accepted one of her feathers. Little Lovebird had even laid an egg for her. By parrot standards, they were already a couple!
A trace of pity showed in Little Lovebird's eyes.
This human couldn't fly and didn't have feathers. She was a bald monkey. How pitiful.
From now on, I'll, Little Lovebird, look after her properly!
On her way home from work, Lin Fengchun adopted a lovebird.
It brought plenty of excitement to her utterly ordinary life.
She had found the parrot during the Flower Festival, so she named her Huazhao.
When the parrot first came home, she was a little timid. Then she returned to her true nature as a flying pair of bolt cutters.
She bit people, scared birds, and randomly chose a piece of furniture to chew on.
Lin Fengchun wanted to get angry, but the little lovebird looked so well-behaved. It must have been some unknown, big-mouthed bird that was biting people. It absolutely couldn't have been our little lovebird.
But later, owl after owl began arriving at her home. They carried letters and knocked on her window, delivering a notice that said Huazhao was actually a spirit.
Lin Fengchun: Huh?
Please, don't keep lovebirds
