Little Thief vs. Down-and-Out Young Master

Xu Sui is a petty thief, scraping by in the martial world with her barely passable skills.

One day, she steals something she shouldn't and accidentally gets caught up in a dispute, leaving her poisoned with a strange toxin. When it flares up, she coughs up blood nonstop, and pain wracks her entire body.

She hears there's a miracle doctor in the west who can cure poisons. Packing her belongings, she sets off west alone.

On the road, she meets a down-and-out young master with a little medical knowledge. He can't cure her, but he can ease the pain. He claims the miracle doctor is his great-great-granduncle's master's master, and that if they find his great-great-granduncle, her life can still be saved. Since they're headed in the same direction, they decide to travel together.

Though the young master has fallen on hard times, he sure has a lot of demands. He wants mountain spring water to drink, hot food to eat, and meat with every meal.

Xu Sui: Why are you so fussy? Are you going to eat or not?

Chu Chao: I used to... (under her glare) Eat, eat, I'll eat.

Xu Sui trudges along with the attitude that she'll live one day at a time, and every day lived is one less day left, uncertain what the future holds. But the string of tragic cases they encounter along the way only deepens the mystery, and the poison in her body seems to conceal a past she knows nothing about.

Strange events keep surfacing, as if an unseen hand is deliberately hiding the truth. To find a cure and stay alive, she can only press on without looking back.

After escaping death once again, Xu Sui opens her eyes to meet a pair of tearful eyes, pleading with her to stay.

She casually wipes the blood from her lips. "Why are you crying? I'm not dead yet."

Chu Chao puts a hand over her mouth. "Don't say that!"

A little scene:

One day, the two pass through Pingcheng and hear about a haunted house.

Figuring there's no shame in taking a free deal, they move in for nothing.

The little courtyard turns out to be surprisingly comfortable, with a pagoda tree in the middle. The wind blows, and its blossoms drift down all around them.

Chu Chao squats beneath the tree, trying to figure out whether the flowers are edible.

Xu Sui suddenly says, "Why don't we find a courtyard like this and settle down together someday?"

Chu Chao understands what she means, and pictures the two of them growing old together in a little courtyard.

For once, he doesn't make a cheeky remark. He nods solemnly and answers, "All right."
