Shen Minxin, the young daughter of an imperial physician, grew up disguised as a boy and aspired to become the finest physician in the land. But a nursery rhyme declaring, “He who wins Minxin wins the realm,” led three princes to pursue her. Shen Minxin cried out, “I only want to become a statesman!” The princes replied, “You can still become the empress.”
