Beneath the Crime

Two months after returning from an interprovincial case, Peng Zheng, deputy captain of the criminal investigation division, saw his vacation plans fall apart halfway through.

A woman in her seventies had died peacefully at home, but her younger son insisted she had been murdered and took his claims to the media. The city bureau urgently called Peng Zheng back while also making a solemn promise to the provincial department: the case would have to be resolved within 72 hours.

On Peng Zheng's first day back at the city bureau, what appeared before him even before the case details was the criminal profiler the bureau had specially brought in early for the criminal investigation division: Zhuang Guanyi, his sworn enemy from high school ten years ago.

Peng Zheng (expressionless): ...Is it still in time to send him back to the provincial department?

Zhuang Guanyi (affectionately): I'm afraid not.
