A Ruthless Daoist Narcissus Story

My master told me I was born to bring calamity, that wherever I went, people would loathe me.

But I refused to believe it. Surely someone would like me. At the very least, I would love myself.

There was only so long I could deceive myself, so I threw myself into the path of ruthlessness. I would cultivate until I became a heartless person, free of all attachments. Once I became an immortal, surely someone would like me.

Behind my sect's back, I dug out my emotional root. I wanted to become a wooden doll, untouched by joy or sorrow.

I stared at that tangled, sticky mass of emotions. So all my feelings were filthy curses and insecurities. But it didn't matter. I was going to become an immortal, after all.

That night, the forbidden art failed. I watched helplessly as the mass of emotions transformed beneath the bronze mirror into my own likeness, clinging to me so tightly that we could not be separated.

I truly felt neither joy nor sorrow, but that other "me" carried all my joy, anger, sorrow, and fear.

He comforted me, promising to protect me for the rest of my life.

If I couldn't face the hostility of my sect, he would take my place and protect me.

I liked him because he always took my side.

But one day, "I" ran away.

He separated from my body and gave himself a new name, modeled after mine.

He said he would cultivate the path of dual cultivation and completely shatter my path.

How could I tolerate such humiliation?

I locked "myself" up, just as "I" had clung to me on the day he was born.

Why cultivate the path of dual cultivation just to shatter my path? How could cultivating with yourself count as shattering your path?

The path of ruthlessness says you must not love anything in the world, but it never says you can't love yourself.

How wonderful. We share one body and one mind, and our thoughts will always be of ourselves.
