Jiang Nan transmigrated.
In this world, countries don't fight wars. Instead, everyone takes part in a live-streamed competition called the Arena.
Each country chooses a representative and summons a willing deity, borrowing that deity's power to fight in the arena.
Then, the winner becomes king and the loser becomes a dog. The defeated lose everything, bit by bit: their territory, resources, and even the elusive fortune of their nation...
Jiang Nan also discovered that China's pantheon was not only difficult to summon, but that the people had completely forgotten most of its mythological figures.
So while other countries summoned their gods of war and wisdom, even legendary creators of the world, the summoning array before China's representatives remained empty!
The people who had already succeeded in summoning their deities sneered at Jiang Nan: China's gods have abandoned you at last! Why keep waiting here?
Just as Jiang Nan exhausted every effort to summon a deity and was once again disappointed, a cold voice spoke beside her ear.
[Congratulations, Host. You have bound yourself to the Divine Summoning System. You can offer your fortune, lifespan, and more in exchange for a chance to communicate with the gods!]
The System waited for Jiang Nan to act like its previous Hosts: either kneel and beg for mercy while bargaining with it, scheme against others, or seize the chance to become the world's savior and receive the praise of millions.
Instead, it heard Jiang Nan's utterly calm voice.
[Can I see them first?]
And so Jiang Nan saw it: against the backdrop of a distant galaxy, a towering divine palace seemed to stand at the edge of the universe. Countless Chinese deities slept within it. The particles of the galaxy swirled and shifted, yet could not disturb their ageless stillness.
Then Jiang Nan spoke softly.
"I am Jiang Nan, a junior. I offer my life and ask only that you save China once more!"
Jiang Nan's voice was not loud. If anything, it was faint.
But almost as soon as the words left her lips, the gods who had slumbered for ages opened their eyes. They saw Jiang Nan, the countless despairing people of China behind her, and the arrogant foreign invaders!
At first, the divine palace was silent.
Then, in an instant...
The Third Prince's figure passed straight through the summoning array as if it were not even there, appearing behind Jiang Nan.
"So you're the one who bullied my kid into this state?"
His words had barely left his mouth when a flash of cold light gleamed. His spear was already drawn!
His killing intent surged!
"I, Old Sun, only took a nap, and you bullied them into this state? You must think far too little of me!"
The Great Sage Equal to Heaven even gave a lazy yawn as he spoke.
But his staff was already in motion!
"This is the Ruyi Jingu Bang, the Sea-Calming Golden-Hooped Staff. Come on! Take a strike from Old Sun!"
When the System felt the shockwaves from the two deities' attacks, even it, which had remained unchanged for ages, froze.
It was no longer calm and condescending as before. Instead, it was afraid.
[How is this possible? Don't the gods only open their eyes to glance at people after desperate blood sacrifices and offerings of immense fortune? How could they end a slumber that had lasted ten thousand years just because you called for help, all to back you up?!]
[Who are you, really?]
Jiang Nan smiled faintly.
[I'm nobody special!]
[Your experience only shows that your gods are aloof, standing above mortals!]
[The gods of China say: Call, and they will come. Ask, and they will answer!]
[The Third Prince slew a dragon to save the people and bring them peace! The Great Sage Equal to Heaven went so far as to appeal to Heaven itself to ask for rain!]
[The King of Hell became a god through the good deeds people performed in his name, and Nüwa mended the sky to save the world!]
[They have always come from the mortal world and returned to it!]
[How could they stand by and ignore China's plight? I summoned them only to tell them...]
China is in danger. Gods, awaken!
Now, go and die!
