Yu Shian was born knowing how to act.
When his mother died and his stepmother entered the household, the first skill he learned was how to cry. He cried just enough, looking so pitiful that his stepmother had nowhere to vent her anger, while his father was too ashamed to say a word.
His stepbrother said he had mastered every trick in the art of playing the victim, and could transform into a white lotus flower seventy-two different ways. What? No, no, that's not true. He's the poor little victim of a wealthy family.
Later, he was set up in an arranged marriage. His match was Lu Qiyuan of the wealthy Lu family, a man rumored to be gloomy, taciturn, and ruthless.
Yu Shian took a deep breath and decided to put his lifetime of acting experience to work.
He would look pitiful, play hard to get, and gaze through tear-filled eyes. He was determined to make that gloomy man think he was just a fragile little flower in need of protection, so he could get through the marriage in peace.
On their wedding night, he tugged at Lu Qiyuan's sleeve with reddened eyes. "Honey, I... I'm scared."
His voice trembled, his eyelashes fluttered, and the tears in his eyes were just about to fall.
Lu Qiyuan looked down at him and stayed silent for a long time, so long that Yu Shian nearly thought his acting had fallen flat.
Then Lu Qiyuan spoke, his voice low and cool. "Don't be afraid."
Yu Shian applauded himself in his mind. He threw himself into the performance even more, acting with such dedication that he forgot to eat and sleep. But somewhere along the way, something felt wrong.
Lu Qiyuan remembered all his little habits, prepared little surprises for him, and stood by his side without hesitation.
Yu Shian started to panic. Oh no, he seemed to be falling for him.
Yu Shian locked himself in the bathroom and scolded himself for half an hour, then decided to go tell Lu Qiyuan the truth.
But just as he reached the door, he heard Lu Qiyuan talking on the phone.
"Who said he's my first love? I only met him once when we were kids."
Yu Shian's heart shattered with a crack. While Lu Qiyuan was away on a business trip for a week, Yu Shian packed his bags and ran away from home.
Tears dampened his eyelashes as he swore he would never be lovesick again!
When Lu Qiyuan returned, he found an empty bedroom. His wife had left a note saying their love was over and run away.
On the first day his wife was gone, Lu Qiyuan pretended not to care.
On the second day, he began to panic, unable to eat or sleep.
On the third day, Lu Qiyuan heard his assistant say that Yu Shian had been admitted to the hospital and seemed to have tried to take his own life.
Lu Qiyuan could no longer sit still. He rushed to the hospital and began his desperate pursuit to win his wife back. "If you're hurting, stab me instead. Just don't do anything foolish."
Yu Shian: "Do anything foolish? Me? I just fell by accident and broke my hand!"
Bonus scene:
After they got together, Yu Shian's acting bug struck again. He said he wanted to keep playing the pitiful man whose love went unreturned.
Lu Qiyuan didn't understand, but he went along with it.
Until one day, at a banquet, Yu Shian's rival sneered at him. "I suggest you get divorced soon. Don't hold Mr. Lu back."
Yu Shian blinked and called Lu Qiyuan over, sounding aggrieved. "Honey, they all say you should divorce me..."
"Which blind idiot said that?" Lu Qiyuan pulled Yu Shian into his arms. "I worked so hard to win my wife back. Who gave you the nerve?"
Yu Shian stifled a laugh and buried his face in Lu Qiyuan's chest, his shoulders shaking.
Lu Qiyuan leaned down and whispered in his ear, "Done acting?"
"What if I still want to act?" Yu Shian smiled brightly.
"Fine." Lu Qiyuan wrapped an arm around his waist and turned to leave, abandoning a roomful of stunned guests. "Act however you want. I'll play along."
