In 1993, after graduating from high school, Shu Yue defied her parents and ran away from her arranged marriage. She fled Alta by coach, leaving behind everything familiar.
On her first day in Guangzhou, Shu Yue met a kind man.
Near the train station, drivers charged exorbitant fares, and pickpockets were everywhere.
All the money Shu Yue had secretly saved over three years was stolen. With nowhere to go, she broke down and sobbed at the station.
As she teetered on the edge of despair, a gentle, youthful voice sounded above her. "Miss, are you in some kind of trouble?"
Shu Yue looked up through her tears and met the handsome face of a man.
He was dressed stylishly, with sunglasses perched on his nose. His features were sharp and striking, like a movie star in a magazine.
Shu Yue stared at him, momentarily spellbound.
"My money was stolen. I don't have a cent to my name..."
"Come with me. I can give you food and a place to stay."
And so, eighteen-year-old Shu Yue left the train station with twenty-five-year-old Liang Xubai and became a saleswoman in the home appliance department of his family's mall.
Later, after Shu Yue saw Liang Xubai dancing with his fiancée at the annual gala, she decided to strike out on her own.
When he found out she was resigning, Liang Xubai tried to persuade her earnestly. "A Yue, running a business isn't as easy as you think. Please think it over."
Tears rolled down her cheeks. Shu Yue wiped them away and replied firmly, "Mr. Liang, thank you for taking care of me all these years. I've made up my mind. Please don't try to stop me."
Starting a business was, of course, nowhere near as easy as Shu Yue had imagined. She failed again and again.
But she never gave up. After working hard to the very end, she finally had the chance to stand beside Liang Xubai.
Everyone else called her Boss Shu. He alone continued to call her A Yue, just as he always had.
The day she laid her cards on the table, Shu Yue asked him with red-rimmed eyes, "Liang Xubai, am I good enough to stand by your side now?"
Liang Xubai paused, then answered, "A Yue, you've always been good enough."
