The writing inside was strange and twisted, neither Tibetan nor Sanskrit.
The document was sent to the military research institute. After linguists and religious scholars decoded and compared it, they made a shocking discovery.
It was not a Buddhist scripture, but one of the most ancient remnants of the early Bon tradition, predating Buddhism's arrival in Tibet.
The book may have been written as early as the Zhangzhung Kingdom, long before Princess Wencheng entered Tibet.
At first, they assumed it was simply an ancient Tibetan fantasy about sacred mountain landscapes and the paths the dead took to the afterlife.
But within a few months, three scholars involved in deciphering the document died one after another.
Their deaths were bizarre. They wore ghastly smiles, their limbs curled up, and they had no external injuries.
The autopsies yielded nothing, and the authorities remained silent. In the end, only one person survived.
