Zhu Wushuang x Guo's daughter | 24-year age gap | Second-chance romance
Zhu Wushuang was in her forties, long past the age when people expected her to marry. But matchmakers still came one after another, saying that one bachelor had taken a fancy to her, or that some landowner wanted her as a concubine.
"Wushuang, you're not getting any younger. Your career is neither here nor there, and after more than twenty years you're still a junior constable. Are you really going to go on like this for the rest of your life?"
What was wrong with going on like this? Wushuang still used Yan Xiaoliu as a shield, telling Matchmaker Wang, "You know how it is. I've been in love with Constable Yan for ages."
That excuse worked like a charm. Poor Yan Xiaoliu had to endure everyone's scorn. He was short and shaped like a winter melon, too. What was there not to like about him, that Wushuang wouldn't have him?
Yan Xiaoliu was about to be promoted to the Six Gates Bureau in the capital, and at his celebratory banquet, he got another earful. He begged Wushuang to let him off the hook, saying she should go to the capital with him instead.
Wushuang refused, saying she was quite happy where she was.
He asked, "When I leave, how are you going to fend off all the people trying to find you a match?"
"If there's no other way, I'll just say I like women."
"You're crazy."
Yan Xiaoliu didn't take her seriously. Wushuang had changed a lot over the years, always saying strange things that sounded half-mad and half-foolish.
Only much later did he learn that she'd meant it. She was in love with a woman, and that woman was the daughter of Guo Furong and Lu Xiucai.
A girl named Lu Qingning.

Wushuang first met Lu Qingning four years ago.
It was the rainy season, and a heavy downpour swept over the city. Xiaoliu had fallen down the mountain and injured himself, and Qingning came to fill in for him.
Qingning had just turned eighteen that year. She called Wushuang Auntie Wushuang. Guo Furong asked Wushuang to look after her, and somehow that ended with them in bed together.
Wushuang was the one who ended things later. The young woman hated her and said she never wanted to see her again.
Wushuang never expected they would meet again. She thought Guo Furong would never let her precious daughter get anywhere near her.
But Xiaoliu left, and the person sent to take his place was Qingning.
It was the rainy season once more. Qingning stepped off the passenger boat, no longer the innocent young woman she'd been back then.

No one was more anxious about Wushuang getting married than Guo Furong.
The year they moved from the provinces to the capital, Lu Xiucai happened to be promoted to Vice Minister of Revenue. At a gathering, Guo Furong once again joined everyone in pressuring her:
"Wushuang, when are you and Xiaoliu finally getting married?"
Everyone else: "Yes, exactly!"
This year, at last, things were different.
She appeared before everyone holding Lu Qingning's hand. Before she could say a word, Guo Furong leaped to her feet, flustered and furious:
"Lu Qingning is yours! Zhu Wushuang, let go of my daughter!"
Everyone: !!!
