The Little Assassin and the Retired Minister

Tan Yu rarely reveals her real name.

Tan Yu sounds like "spittoon." It's an awful name, an insult to her dignity as a top assassin.

One day, wounded, she takes shelter in a little farmhouse.

A blind man lives there, smiling all the time.

He's a decent fellow. He feeds her, gives her a place to stay, and never fights back.

The one thing she can't stand: he keeps smiling and calling her Little Tan Yu.

-

Tan Yu: You can read. Why don't you take the imperial examinations?

Yan Weining: I wrote the exam syllabus, and the chief examiner is probably a former colleague of mine. What fun would it be for me to take the exam?

Tan Yu nods along, then turns away and dismisses his words as nonsense.

On their wedding day, Tan Yu has barely woken up when Yan Weining tells her that a few modest gifts have arrived outside.

She says, "Oh," and pushes open the door. It won't budge. It's completely blocked!

Tan Yu looks out the window. The courtyard is full of wedding gifts, piled higher than the walls. And he calls this modest?

Yan Weining: I used to teach a few students. They're just being polite.

After Yan Weining's eyesight is cured, he has to return to his hometown.

Tan Yu gets some local specialties ready to bring along, a dried chicken in her left hand and cured fish in her right.

When they get there, Tan Yu is stunned. It takes half an hour just to walk from the front gate to the side courtyard!

She turns and glares at Yan Weining. "Your family is so rich. Why was my bride price just one gold hairpin?"
