I had mastered the Ruthless Dao and stood as the strongest cultivator on the continent. To break through my bottleneck and strengthen my Dao Heart, I deliberately chose a handsome cultivator to become my Dao companion.
My Dao companion had once been a genius, too, but he had been poisoned while saving someone. Now he had lost all his cultivation, was plagued by illness, and was beyond recovery.
I thought he was foolish. He had given everything to save someone, yet no one was grateful. He had ended up in such a wretched state, but still held no resentment. He was a truly good person.
So I promised him that if he became my Dao companion and cultivated with me, helping me break through my bottleneck and ascend, I would save him and help him take revenge while I was at it.
He agreed.
He said he had no need for revenge, and that whether or not I saved him, he would still help me.
I was speechless. He was a genuine saint.
I had always hated people like that, but that was exactly why I believed he truly meant to help me. Dual cultivation required both parties to be willing. There could be no scheming involved.
I was right, but I hadn't thought far enough.
My Dao companion, whom I had met only three times, didn't betray me. My disciple, whom I had raised with my own hands, and my entire sect did. They joined forces with other factions and killed me during my ascension tribulation.
My disciple even revealed my trump card: the five fragments of my soul that I had separated and hidden in various places in case my tribulation failed.
They feared me. They were afraid that if they didn't annihilate me completely, I would return one day to take revenge, so they frantically searched for my soul fragments to eliminate every trace of me.
They were right, too.
Four hundred years later, my consciousness awoke in the last surviving fragment of my soul.
I was back.
My disciple had become the foremost practitioner of the Ruthless Dao, founded his own sect, and earned a reputation as a revered figure. My sect had become the greatest on the continent, famed and respected by all.
And my Dao companion had been imprisoned and tortured by them for four hundred years, simply because they wanted to learn where my last soul fragment was.
He could have told them.
But he didn't.
