(One Piece) Angel of the Sea

Imu's palace rose from the ruins of blood and fire. He built Lena a luxurious cage: a crystal dome reflecting countless worlds, golden chandeliers like sunlight frozen in place, and even the flowerbeds filled with Lena's favorite golden roses. All of it was meant to please his one and only goddess.

At first, Lena found it amusing. She reclined on a velvet-covered throne and watched human kings present her with their spoils. She accepted their worship lazily, occasionally lifting Imu's chin with a fingertip, just as she had the first time they met.

"You want more," Imu said, taking her hand. An abyssal light burned in his blood-red eyes. "You want my soul."

"You gave it to me long ago." Lena pulled her hand back. Starlight shook from her wings, illuminating the entire hall.

The turning point came on an ordinary evening. Lena tried as usual to open a rift in space and time, only to find that her vaunted divine power had struck an invisible wall. Imu stood behind her, shadows spreading from his feet and crawling across the entire palace like living things.

"The fruit I ate." For the first time, his voice held no reverence.

Lena's smile froze. At last, she saw that the man before her had never been a devout servant. He was the most cunning of hunters. Every treasure he offered weakened her divine power, and every kiss tightened her bonds.

The palace he built wasn't meant to house her. It was built to imprison a goddess.

"Do you love me?" Lena asked for the first time.

Imu came closer and brushed her trembling lashes with his hand. "I love you, so I want you to become just like me, never again able to return to that heaven where I don't belong."
