A Spring Letter for Little Book Cat

Cold winds sweep through the forest, and all things wither.

The terrible, cold winter is coming.

They say eternal cold and heavy snow will bury everything in the forest,

and everything about spring will disappear.

But Little Walnut still remembers spring.

He remembers his friendship with Little Book Cat,

remembers birdsong and flowers, remembers the patter of spring rain.

He will never forget the things that belong to spring.

Uncle Oak tells him that only by "awakening" can spring return.

So he decides to go alone, into the darkness, down into the earth.

In the freezing blackness, he quietly tells himself that spring will surely come...
