Defiance

As a princess, Jiang You had everything she could want, except the freedom to choose whom she married. The late emperor had promised her to Wen Chong, a powerful minister entrusted with the new emperor's care.

Jiang You had a rebellious streak. If someone tried to force something on her, she wanted no part of it. At the year's imperial examination, she fell for Xin Ce, the newly named third-place graduate, at first sight, and the two soon became devoted to each other.

The new emperor had yet to take power, and Wen Chong ruled the court, which was filled with his followers. Xin Ce was imprisoned for a crime and had both legs broken in the imperial prison. The following year, opposition to Wen Chong rose in court. Though crippled, Xin Ce became the leading figure in the movement to bring him down. Wen Chong's followers were either killed or exiled, and Wen Chong himself was sent to the imperial prison.

As the entire court clamored for Wen Chong's execution, Jiang You went to the emperor to ask for his life.

"I don't care about anyone else. Wen Chong is mine. He can't die."
