Breaking the Spell of Beauty

Qi Tanyu never expected to marry a dog who bites.

She was delicate and gentle by nature, and preferred the refined gentlemanly type. She'd only hoped for a harmonious marriage, brewing tea and listening to the snow, and a lifetime of elegance.

But then her family fell on hard times, and her father offended a powerful noble. He went everywhere seeking help, but no one would lend a hand.

Everyone who had once come to ask for Qi Tanyu's hand in marriage now kept their distance.

Only one powerful family braved the turmoil and came to propose.

Qi Tanyu had once seen the man from afar. Tall and imposing, with a stern face, he could not have been less like a refined gentleman.

She was told she was only marrying him to bring him good fortune, and that her future husband was gravely injured, so frail he was on the verge of death.

Only then did Qi Tanyu reluctantly agree.

But on the first day of their marriage, Qi Tanyu felt she had nothing left to look forward to.

The man showed no sign of being near death. He pinned her down until the dead of night and was still full of energy.

Even when he heard Qi Tanyu trying to stifle her sobs, he only eased his grip a little.

Like a dog that bites, once he had a taste of meat, he wouldn't let go.

Qi Tanyu gazed at the red marks he had left on her snow-white skin, near tears. Counting the days, she wondered: Weren't you supposed to be so frail you were nearly dead?
