Autumn's End

The past echoes like an aria, sung and sighed over and over, its lingering notes winding through the air...

Jun Han, if we get them, can we really go back? She stood facing the white wall and asked softly, as though it were the simplest question in the world, not the fate they were about to face.

I don't know. But we should seize even the slightest hope. Don't you think? Jun Han looked at the faint candlelight, determination filling his eyes. Whatever happens, this time I'll protect you. You have to believe me.

The candle flame flickered softly in the silence, and the wick crackled faintly. Her eyes trembled ever so slightly as she closed them. Yes.

She held the jade lock in her hand, feeling a chill seep into her heart. At last, tears fell unchecked from her despairing eyes, one by one, onto the smooth, rounded jade, leaving glistening trails. Suddenly, she leapt up and tried to rush out. His hands gripped her shoulders, and his voice was as cool as ever. I'll tell you again: she's dead! Dead! Even if you go out, you won't find her body!

You're lying! She struck his chest hard with one hand, shouting, She isn't dead! She gave me the jade lock to tell me that at last we can go home together! She must be waiting for me outside! Let go! Let me out! Her right hand carefully guarded the jade lock all the while. Its gleam stung his eyes. He suddenly released her and asked coldly, Is this the jade lock you've been searching for all along? Can it really take you home? She tried to flee. Yes! I'm telling you, I'm leaving... Only when she reached the door did she realize he had snatched the jade lock away. A mocking smile touched his lips, though his eyes were icy; a hint of pain spread through them. He raised the lock high, watching the terror in her eyes

No! She lunged for it in a panic. After a sharp crack, only broken jade remained scattered across the floor. She stood frozen. He swept away with a flick of his sleeve. His angry words still echoed through the silent air... In life, you belong to me, Yin Zhen; in death, your soul belongs to me too! Never dream of leaving me!
