Sang Bozhou and Shang Boyan first met on the stone steps at Chaotianmen in Chongqing. Three-and-a-half-year-old Sang Bozhou snatched a White Rabbit candy from three-year-old Shang Boyan and got kicked flat on the ground. Nearby, both sets of parents pulled out their phones to record and place bets, laughing so hard they could barely stand.
This was the beginning of the "Twin Bo" duo.
For the next twenty-plus years, they were either fighting or on their way to a fight. They tattled on each other in kindergarten, compared report cards in elementary school, traded trash talk at middle school basketball games, and at the high school sports festival, one danced to "Gangnam Style" while the other performed ballroom dancing. The whole school watched the drama, the teachers placed bets, and their parents egged them on. They competed for twenty years without ever settling who was better, and eventually ended up in the same household registry.
One became a firefighter, the other a police officer.
On their fifth wedding anniversary, Sang Bozhou charged into a burning building and never came back. Shang Boyan's mind created a dream in which his lover was still alive, and everything in the dream was sweet.
Until he sat at a table laden with hot pot and roses and discovered that his hand passed through the glass of the memorial portrait.
The person he had been waiting for had died in the line of duty four months ago.
