Yun Linglong heard news of her all-powerful ex-husband again: “He was utterly defeated. His cultivation has plummeted, and even his pure medicinal blood can no longer protect him.”
After her ever-sharp-tongued second sister finished, she excitedly added, “I heard he's in the Netherworld now, like Tang Sanzang in the Spider Cave, about to become a medicine vessel for those demons.”
Yun Linglong smiled with satisfaction. “Why leave him to those demons? With cultivation that impressive, he should be dragged to Weakwater to serve me.”
Everyone laughed even harder.
All the immortals and demons of Weakwater knew that Yun Linglong and Lian Xuanying, ruler of the Netherworld, “had a thing” once.
It had not been a particularly happy affair.
Three thousand years after forming a bond with him, she learned that he had always treated her as a pawn. He had also once been involved with the Saintess of the Cold Lands. Their earth-shaking love came to nothing, and Yun Linglong, with her similarly frosty face, ended up suffering for it.
Back then, he was the ruler of the eighteen levels of the Netherworld, able to summon clouds and rain with a turn of his hand. He was a demon god who could crush the mighty Heaven-Slaying General with a flick of his finger, and the true heir of an evil god, whose blood could turn demons into Buddhas and make gods and Buddhas abandon the Way, sparking a conflict across the thirty-six realms that dimmed the sun and moon.
She was merely a little immortal with a pretty face, weak spiritual power, and an unknown background.
Things were different now. He had fallen from grace, worse off than a stray dog. And Yun Linglong was the long-awaited Candle-Bearing Saintess of the White Flood Dragon Clan, as well as the young mistress of Weakwater Immortal Land.
Lian Xuanying's crushing defeat was wonderful news. Yun Linglong had been waiting for it in Weakwater for hundreds of years.
“I'll go kill him,” she told the demons and immortals with a smile.
Her eldest sister said anxiously, “No matter how badly he's been defeated, a starving camel is still bigger than a horse.”
Yun Linglong didn't care in the slightest. She smiled brightly. “I know him very well.”
*
Of course she knew him very well. No one could know him better than the ex-wife who had abandoned him without a second thought hundreds of years ago, Lian Xuanying thought, gazing with bloodshot eyes at the figure striding into his Demon Palace.
He had once believed he knew her, too.
“You came back to see me,” he said, his gaze lingering over her face, taking in the familiar nose and long lashes he had not seen in so long, then carefully examining her astonishingly pale eyes. “Once in a hundred years.”
His gaze fixed on her lips. Almost beside himself, he asked, “You finally thought of me... just to capture me?”
Gazing at the eyes, as vivid and wickedly beautiful as ever, in the dark Demon Palace, Yun Linglong smiled with satisfaction. “I came to kill you.”
And so the Demon God Lian Xuanying, at the most inappropriate moment, remembered the taste of kissing her lips and running his hands over her back. Deeply melancholy, he raised a hand toward the eight thousand demon generals hovering in the air and pointed at this long-awaited, utterly heartless guest:
“Now that you're here, don't think you can leave.”
“Seize her.”
