Blurb:
Song Wu and Lu Heng are known in the capital as an exemplary couple. They come from equally distinguished families, and are a handsome man and a beautiful woman. Everyone says the emperor made an excellent match when he arranged their marriage.
But no one knows that before the imperial decree arrived, the Lu family had asked to marry the eldest daughter, Song Zhi, not Song Wu, the third daughter.
The new emperor had just ascended the throne, and to demonstrate his benevolence, he arranged three marriages. His intentions were good, but unfortunately, he mixed up the names and matched Song Zhi with Song Wu's place.
The emperor had spoken, and the decree was already issued. It could hardly be changed.
So the Lu family reluctantly married Song Wu, and Song Wu steeled herself and married into their household.
After the wedding, the two acted like an exemplary couple in public, treating each other with mutual respect.
In private, however, Lu Heng was a cold man and treated his new wife just as coldly. Apart from their intimate moments, they rarely spoke.
They shared a bed and pillow, their bodies pressed close, their breath mingling, hot and heavy, yet they still felt like strangers.
Song Wu had no complaints. She knew Lu Heng loved her elder sister. But fate had other plans: one sister married far away, and the other married someone else.
She simply disliked life in the Lu household. It was as dull as still water, tedious and predictable. But how could she divorce when the emperor himself had arranged the marriage?
Song Wu thought she would spend her whole life in this dull routine, until her elder sister suddenly returned home after a divorce, and the cousin she had grown up with as a childhood sweetheart came back to the capital from afar.
At a family banquet, her aunt was unhappy that her elder sister had returned after a divorce. She repeatedly brought up the old marriage arrangement between her sister and Lu Heng, implying that Song Wu had stolen her sister's match. The gathering turned unbearably awkward.
Song Wu was so frustrated that she left to clear her head. She chatted with her cousin, whom she hadn't seen in a long time, and when she turned around, she found herself looking into a pair of cold, shadowed eyes.
The smile slowly faded from her face, and she froze in place.
That night, Song Wu couldn't take any more of his relentless attention. She glared at the man beside her. "Are we going to sleep or not?"
Lu Heng didn't stop. His gaze was dark and husky. "You were happy to see him, weren't you? You've never smiled at me like that."
Song Wu stared at him for a long time, then suddenly kicked him and said coldly, "And aren't you the same?"
After that night, their calm, uneventful life was completely turned upside down.
[They may not know each other well, but that doesn't mean they can't do what married people do.]
