When the Stars Fall into the Sea

A high fever damaged my mind, leaving me with the mind of an eight-year-old. All I could remember was that I needed to fill a jar with lucky stars for my sister.

My stepsister, He Mingfei, was a ruthless power broker among the capital's elite. She despised me, the unwanted burden her father had acquired when he married my mother.

She smashed my glass jar and pointed at the colored paper on the floor. "Trying to win me over? Get on your knees and put it back together."

I obediently knelt down. Shards of glass sliced my palms until they were slick with blood, but I kept smiling foolishly as I handed her a bloodstained star.

"Take it, Sis. It can make wishes come true."

He Mingfei waved it away in disgust, then turned and left, taking with her the woman who had stolen the credit for saving my life.

Later, that woman tricked me into going out to sea.

She smiled and told me that if I swam to the bottom of the ocean and caught a real star, my sister would stop hating me.

Without hesitation, I jumped into the water.

When He Mingfei arrived, all she saw was a faded old star floating on the surface.

She remembered that, during the kidnapping years ago, I had used this very star to comfort her in the dark shipping container and tell her not to be afraid.

He Mingfei searched the shore for seven days and seven nights, wearing the skin from all ten fingers, but she never found the girl who had smiled at her in the darkness, holding out a star.
