[Fragile, scheming princess VS. gentle, frail minister of state]
Though Wei Yiyu was nominally the most honored princess, she was raised on a country estate, growing up on wild greens. After she was brought back to the palace, she met her own younger sister, who had been raised in utter luxury.
Her mother wanted her to marry off in her sister's place. Her father told her to put the nation first, and even the wet nurse who had raised her told her to accept her fate.
On a rainy night, she escaped her cage and knocked on the Chancellor's residence gate.
Rumor had it that Chancellor Li Weiyu wielded power over the court and was ruthless, feared even by the emperor. She pretended to be frail and bowed before him, eyes brimming with tears. "Chancellor, A Yu doesn't want to marry into the Southern Barbarians. I beg you to help me, even if it means I must serve as your slave..."
Before she could finish, a violent fit of coughing came from behind the screen. A young man was wheeled out in a wooden chair. His face was pale, but he insisted on reaching out to her. "Princess, please don't say that."
Wei Yiyu looked at his hand, gritted her teeth, and took it.
He led troops into battle despite his illness and traded his military achievements for an imperial decree granting them marriage. On their wedding night, beneath the red candles, Li Weiyu smiled wanly. "Princess, don't be afraid. I will protect you."
She thought their marriage was a union of convenience: he wanted supreme imperial power, and she was a pawn to conceal his ambitions.
Until she accidentally entered the secret chamber in his study. The desk was covered with records of her life and all the dangers she had faced. At the end, Li Weiyu had written: "I transmigrated a thousand years through time solely to explore the life of Princess Chang of Jing'an. Who could have imagined that the world would be so cruel and the princess so alone? I can only hope to use all I have learned in my life to keep her safe."
He embraced her from behind, his voice trembling. "I am guilty. I once wanted to be a loyal minister remembered in the history books, but now... I only want to be the princess's humble servant."
Wei Yiyu took his hand. If Li Weiyu was a precious gift from Heaven, then she would never let him go.
