In three years on the throne, he has done three great things

Second, he seized the military power of border generals who were practically feudal princes.

Shen Zhu is the mad dog the emperor keeps, sent to bite into the hard bones the emperor cannot handle himself.
He bit three ministers and two generals to death, becoming a trusted courtier with power over the entire court.
So trusted that he became the emperor's bedfellow.
The two lie entwined together, each paying lip service to the other.
Xiao Changning warmly praises Shen Zhu's loyalty, while thinking that once the mad dog has dealt with everyone who deserves to die, he can reward him with an intact corpse.
Shen Zhu silently kisses the back of his neck, thinking that nothing is more delightful than the dragon throne beneath this ailing emperor.
Their two pairs of peach-blossom eyes meet with smiles.
Each knows exactly what the other is thinking.
Their affection makes everyone around them envious.
