A Little New York Diner in the Nineties

Qiao Linlin transmigrates into the 1990s as one of the "American drifters." To pay off her debts, she adopts her young nephew and opens a lunch counter outside an elementary school.

At first, when parents hear that Qiao Linlin is feeding her nephew braised pig intestines, pork tripe soup, salted pork liver, and the like, they're furious. Isn't that child abuse? They'd call the police before anyone would even think of eating at her little restaurant!

But later, they can't get enough.

Parent 1: Oh, boss, your food is so delicious. Can I eat here too?

Qiao Linlin refuses: The lunch counter is only for kids.

Parent 2: Sweetie, I've signed you up for the lunch counter. Eating isn't important, just study hard. Bring home anything you can't finish for Mom.

Sweetie refuses: Dream on. I don't even get enough to eat.

Before long, the parents discover that Qiao Linlin isn't only a great cook, she's also a fantastic tutor. No matter how poorly a child does in school, a month at her lunch counter turns them into a math genius.

Parents come from far and wide, willing to pay a premium to sign up, but Qiao Linlin insists on taking only ten kids.

Qiao Linlin: Are you kidding? To teach the multiplication table, don't I have to teach them Chinese first? I can't spend every day saying, "Wang wang gets wang, rabbit rabbit gets fu, sleep sleep gets milk..."

Chinese is profound and full of subtleties. Teaching ten kids a year is already enough to kill her.
