Pretty, sweet girl / Stiff and abstinent
Lin Wan and Xie Qingyan were brought together in a family-arranged marriage. The first time she saw him, Lin Wan thought he was the most handsome and good-looking man she'd ever met.
She was a little smitten, but Xie Qingyan's aloof, high-and-mighty coldness thoroughly crushed her hopes.
He was handsome and distant, cool and abstinent, his suit impeccably pressed. He warned Lin Wan, "We don't know each other in public."
After they married, they went through the motions without exchanging a word. He was as cold as ice, impossible to get close to.
During a collaboration, Lin Wan, a screenwriter, joined Xie Qingyan's production team. She tried to introduce herself, but Xie Qingyan changed the subject. From then on, everything about him rubbed her the wrong way.
The couple, who were strangers as soon as they got out of bed, now had to discuss work on set. They often disagreed, and arguments became the norm. Everyone was used to it.
As a director, Xie Qingyan had his own considerations, while Lin Wan wouldn't let anyone change her script on a whim.
Their relatively peaceful married life was shattered in an instant.
In bed, he had an insatiable appetite. Out of bed, his shirt was always buttoned all the way to the top. Stiff and abstinent, only Lin Wan knew what Xie Qingyan was like in bed.
Xie Qingyan had always thought their relationship would carry on like this. He knew perfectly well that there was no passionate love between them.
But one day, when he went to see Lin Wan as usual, the woman who had once taken the initiative shut him out. After that, Xie Qingyan never brought it up again.
He tried hard to act as if he didn't care, waiting for Lin Wan to make the first move. But he waited and waited, and she didn't pay him the slightest attention, acting as if nothing had happened.
At a movie-industry banquet, several actresses were seated beside Xie Qingyan, while several male stars were seated beside Lin Wan.
The married couple looked at each other from across the room. Xie Qingyan appeared calm and unbothered, but when he heard Lin Wan say she was single and unmarried, he was secretly furious, veins bulging with rage.
Even though they'd done everything married people do, Xie Qingyan still put on airs. When he saw Lin Wan getting close to other people, he silently competed with them, while refusing to admit it aloud.
A friend kindly tried to talk some sense into him. He replied coldly, "What are you worried about? I have a marriage certificate. I'm her legitimate husband, and the law protects our marriage."
But those people trying to take his place didn't care about that. They were smooth talkers, a little manipulative, and pretended to be above it all.
Seeing things take a troubling turn, Xie Qingyan went looking for them and slapped a marriage certificate down in front of them. But the other person wasn't intimidated at all.
They glanced at it and said nonchalantly, "So what?"
"Don't worry, I won't steal your rightful-wife spot. Making Wanwan happy is better left to me."
Xie Qingyan was steady and terribly old-fashioned. He'd never met anyone so shameless. He wasn't particularly cunning or skilled at scheming, and he lost every time he tried.
After that, the usually abstinent and stiff Xie Qingyan changed.
His unchanging white shirts were replaced with wine-red ones. Whenever they were alone, he would hold Lin Wan and whisper things that made her blush and her heart race.
"Lin Wan, you're my wife. We haven't divorced. You have to let me hold you and take your hand."
