A 1990s Fisherwoman Makes Her Fortune With Seafood and Coastal Foraging

The island girl You Xia died, and to her surprise, she felt relieved.

Her family had a dependable, capable eldest brother and lively, mischievous twin younger brothers. As the second daughter, she was unremarkable and frail. Without her weighing them down, her parents might grieve for a long time, but they would still keep the whole family striving to escape poverty and scrape together enough to eat... right?

After her death, her spirit drifted in the sea. But what You Xia saw was her parents grieving so terribly over her death that they cried themselves blind. Her eldest brother fell into despair and dropped out of school, while her youngest brother rebelled and ran away from home with her ashes.

By the third year after her death, the family was practically destroyed.

When You Xia opened her eyes again, it was 1991.

That year, her father had just been laid off from the factory, with a bleak future ahead. Her mother had set up a small stall selling oyster omelets by the market entrance, but no one was buying. The family was also deeply in debt to their friends and relatives.

Mazu blessed her: You Xia discovered she had brought back the abilities she'd had as a ghost. She could breathe freely underwater and control her body temperature!

Why wait, then? You Xia grabbed a net and a fish spear and headed straight into the sea. While everyone else cast their nets from the surface, she dove right down to meet the fish, shrimp, and crabs face-to-face.

When the tide went out, You Xia came ashore with a net full of yellow croaker, sea bream, orchid crabs, groupers, and abalone. Before long, a line would form at her mother's stall.

"Scallion-oil swimming crabs, salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp, steamed grouper, seafood fried rice cakes... One serving per person, first come, first served!"

You Xia had only meant to use her talents to give her family a better life. She didn't expect to catch the rise of island tourism, or for her parents to be so capable that all three siblings would grow up rich and carefree!
