Sasaki Hiyori died the summer before she started high school.
She continued living in this world as a spirit for three years.
After her death, her family eventually decided to leave Japan and settle in another country.
She couldn’t leave, so she drifted around alone, with nowhere to go.
*
One day, she saw a group of energetic high school boys heading home after practice, volleyballs in hand. They all looked so happy and dazzling.
Then she realized that one of the boys, the one with the pudding-bowl haircut, seemed able to see her.
"Can you see me?" Sasaki Hiyori looked at Kozume Kenma with hopeful eyes.
Kozume Kenma didn’t answer. He lowered his head and carried on playing his handheld game, as if he hadn’t seen her.
He must have stayed up too late last night. He was hallucinating.
How could he see a translucent girl in broad daylight?
Sasaki Hiyori didn’t ask again. She just quietly followed along.
When he got home, the translucent girl was still there.
So it wasn’t a hallucination...
*
Kuroo noticed that Kenma had been acting strange lately. He kept talking to thin air and often bought enough food for two.
And Kenma wasn’t exactly a big eater!
He thought Kenma had been playing on his phone so much that he’d lost his mind, and was about to lecture him.
Kenma: "Kuro, you might not believe this, but I’ve made a ghost friend."
What kind of nonsense was that? Of course he didn’t believe it!
Until later, when he saw the translucent girl too.
All right. He believed it.
So ghosts really did exist, and this one was a pretty girl.
*
Gradually, more and more people could see Sasaki Hiyori.
Sasaki Hiyori realized she had become corporeal. "I died, but now I’m alive again!"
After coming back to life, Sasaki Hiyori realized that everyone who had been able to see her as a spirit was good at sports.
Was it because they complemented her, a good-for-nothing at sports?
*
Unable to get in touch with her family, Sasaki Hiyori could only ask for help from the friends she’d made as a spirit.
Her friends were so enthusiastic, and their help never stopped.
It was just that the things they offered to help with started getting strange.
"I can be your boyfriend, Hiyori."
"I can be your bed."
"I can teach you how to kiss me."
Sasaki Hiyori: "What?!"
Were they helping her, or themselves...
