Everyone in the league knew that Wang Jiexi had a beloved little sister, but no one except him knew she had a special ability: she could hear the thoughts of character cards.
When she was fifteen, Wang Jiexi took Wang Shiyan to the Tiny Herb club for the first time. She crouched in a corner of the training room and spoke to the air in a babyish voice: "Don't cry. A fall won't kill a Mage."
The whole team thought the little princess was talking to a doll. Only Wang Jiexi noticed that she was staring at the character model on the screen that had just been knocked out with no health left.
That night, Wang Jiexi sat her on his lap and asked, "What did you hear?"
Wang Shiyan counted on her fingers. "The brother with the broom said, 'My butt really hurts.' The sister with the sword beside him said, 'Serves you right. That's what you get for stepping on my cape.'"
Wang Jiexi was silent for ten minutes. The next day, he installed soundproofing throughout her bedroom. It wasn't that he was deliberately hiding anything. He was just afraid the account cards would be too noisy.
From then on, a strange sight could be seen in Tiny Herb's training room: the little girl perched on Wang Jiexi's shoulder, occasionally leaning close to his ear to whisper a report:
"That Priest says he wants to clock out."
"The Battle Mage is calling your tactics dirty."
"Lord Grim says... it doesn't want to fly today. It wants to sleep."
Wang Jiexi typed away without changing expression. In the next team battle, the Priest who wanted to clock out was precisely targeted, and the Battle Mage who'd insulted him was flanked and killed. Lord Grim really didn't fly much that day, because Wang Jiexi switched to a ground-based suppression strategy.
The whole league thought Wang Jiexi was a tactical genius. No one knew he had a living mind-reading accessory tucked in his arms.
Then, one summer, Wang Shiyan pointed at the Blue Rain training camp announcement on the computer screen, her eyes shining. "Bro, I want to go to the Blue Rain training camp this summer."
Wang Jiexi set down his teacup. His first thought wasn't their old rivalry. Instead, he frowned and asked, "Blue Rain? Did one of the characters there start talking to you?"
Wang Shiyan shook her head, then nodded, and finally smiled mysteriously. "Soksar says it's waited ten years for someone who can understand its song."
Wang Jiexi's teacup lid clicked shut.
Wang Shiyan secretly went to G City. That night, Wang Jiexi called to hunt her down.
"Come back tomorrow. I've saved you a place at Tiny Herb's training camp."
"Bro," Wang Shiyan said, gazing out at the night sky over G City, "I'm not coming back. I'm making my debut with Blue Rain tomorrow!"
In B City, Wang Jiexi called an emergency Tiny Herb meeting that very night. Blue Rain's full roster of character profiles was spread across the table.
He tapped the page for Soksar with his index finger, a cold gleam flashing in his eyes. "Our goal for the summer season is to take down Blue Rain. We can't delay."
A team member raised a trembling hand. "Boss, by 'take down' you mean in a match..."
Wang Jiexi sneered. "First in a match, then physically. We can add supernatural methods depending on the situation."
Later, when Wang Shiyan brought Yu Wenzhou home and introduced him as her boyfriend, Wang Jiexi gave Yu Wenzhou a once-over with his mismatched eyes.
Wang Jiexi closed his eyes. He thought he could still salvage the situation.
