Yan Lai is an innocent Miao boy who offers to be their guide for free.

The film crew likes him a lot, thinking he's helpful and simplehearted.

No one notices how cold and twisted his gaze is when he secretly watches Liu Qichi.

On the third day of the second lunar month, Liu Qichi smiles and accepts a drink from a young woman.

On the fifth, he sleeps with a man from the film crew.

On the sixteenth, Liu Qichi actually tries to sneak away.

How dare he run? He's mine!

On the sixteenth day of the second lunar month, Liu Qichi is chosen as a sacrifice and is to be married to a god.

He escapes under cover of night, but a bridal sedan chair blocks his way halfway there. A group of villagers in wedding clothes stand in front of his car, their faces pale blue-white in the headlights.

Ghostly shadows crowd around him. Liu Qichi sits on a stone bed in the mountains with a red veil over his head. Rustling sounds come from every direction, insects crawling nearby. Before long, silver bells ring, now near, now far.

The thing that arrives lifts his veil

Yan Lai smiles at him sweetly.

"Brother Qichi, I've come to save you."

Yan Lai saves him from the ignorant villagers, treats his injured leg, washes his clothes, cooks for him, and takes care of him in every way. He even soothes him to sleep on nights when nightmares torment him.

Liu Qichi gradually recovers and wants to say goodbye to Yan Lai.

But the usually gentle Yan Lai reveals a terrifying darkness.

"Liu Qichi, you're too wild."

Liu Qichi collapses to the ground. As his consciousness fades, he sees Yan Lai tilt his head and smile at him. "I should've kept you chained up."

When Liu Qichi wakes again, chains are fastened around his hands and feet.

Yan Lai pours a bowl of pitch-black medicine into his mouth.

Miao people all know how to use Gu, Liu Qichi thinks.

"Brother Qichi, why can't you learn your lesson?"

"Your leg was broken once, and you still want to run away."

"Have you forgotten? You're already married to me."

Chains and silver bells clash and ring wildly in the room.

Liu Qichi huddles at the foot of the bed, pleading in desperation: "Don't do it again..."

Yan Lai ignores his cries and struggles, grips him around the waist, and drags him beneath himself. "Liu Qichi, you owed me this in your last life."

A few years into their marriage, Bo Wannian buys an Alpha on the black market.

The Alpha is filthy and wild, like a mad dog. He lies on the ground and kisses Bo Wannian's boot. "Please take me home, Master."

Bo Wannian approvingly tugs on the iron chain around his neck. "Jiang Yuxiu is dead. From now on, you're him."

The Alpha is a considerate househusband who washes Bo Wannian's clothes and cooks for him. He's obedient and gentle, happy to be Bo Wannian's little dog.

Until Bo Wannian finds records of the Alpha's correspondence with his political enemy at home and points a gun at him in accusation.

The Alpha is utterly unafraid. "You're so clever. Didn't you realize something was wrong long ago...? Otherwise, why would you have killed that impostor with your own hands?"

At last, Bo Wannian realizes he's in danger. "Who are you, really?"

"You already guessed who I am, didn't you?" The Alpha advances on him step by step. "I'm the one who's a perfect match for you. I'm the one who induced you to present as an Omega, and I'm the one who should've married you."

Bo Wannian is backed into a corner.

"I'm Jiang Yuxiu."

Bo Wannian shoots him.

Enigma blood and pheromones fill the room. Bo Wannian kneels on the floor, his whole body trembling.

The iron chain that once circled Jiang Yuxiu's neck is now fastened around the Omega's waist.

Jiang Yuxiu bites the mark-covered nape of his neck. "I'm only here to take back everything that's mine, including you."

Bo Wannian's mind goes blank under the permanent mark. "You... you bastard..."

Marked by an Enigma far too many times, the Omega can't take any more.

In the chaos, Bo Wannian tries to crawl away, only for Jiang Yuxiu to yank him back by the chain.

"A Nian," Jiang Yuxiu says, pressing down on the small of his back, "you've grown up. It's time to become a mother."

[Reader's Guide]

1. There's a huge difference in their builds. E is probably two sizes bigger than O, with a height difference of about 198 x 176. Jiang's hands are just big enough to grip A Nian around the waist.

2. They have a three-year age difference.

3. Jiang's pheromones smell like absinthe. Bo Wannian's are a secret for now; you'll find out later.

4. Jiang's hair was originally white. He's dyed it black as a disguise, but it'll turn white again when his identity is revealed.

5. There is a runaway pregnancy plot, but it happens much later. Raising a child isn't the main plot, and the child won't appear until the ending.

6. My writing isn't suitable for anyone with strong preferences about particular character types. You might be traumatized if you click in^3^, so be prepared.

1. The seme isn't human, in every sense of the word.

2. There are past-life scenes that aren't mentioned in the blurb. Past-life character setup: insecure, sensitive puppy seme x dashing, shameless immortal lord uke. They have a foster father and son relationship, but before the uke dies, they never confirm their feelings. It's more familial than romantic.

3. The present-life storyline includes some mild confinement and coercion, but nothing extreme. It's just a bit of spice.

4. There may be a plotline, and plot and romance should be about a 50/50 split.
