Liang Xu's first meeting with Gu Jinnian was an utterly humiliating one.

At the time, Liang Xu was sleeping on the streets because she couldn't find a job. Beijing was vast, yet there was no place for her in it.

Tear tracks still glistened on her face.

The man sat before the floor-to-ceiling window, with the lights of countless homes behind him.

The dim light softened his stern features. When he looked at Liang Xu, he set down the cup in his hand.

Their eyes met. Gu Jinnian stood and walked toward her, one step, then another.

At last, he sat down in front of her.

He picked up a tissue and gently wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes.

"A girl looks prettier when she smiles."

That was the first time Liang Xu met Gu Jinnian.

Only later did she learn that the restaurant belonged to him.

Liang Xu never expected to end up in Gu Jinnian's car like that, much less to stay by his side for three years.

He paved the way for her and gave her everything, but Liang Xu knew that true love wasn't among those things.

On the day they parted, Gu Jinnian was perfectly calm. "Are you really leaving?"

Liang Xu paused with her hand on her suitcase, then turned and bowed deeply to him. "Thank you for taking care of me these past three years, Mr. Gu."

Then she turned and walked away without looking back.

Watching Liang Xu's retreating figure, Gu Jinnian smiled.

Then the things on the table ended up scattered across the floor.

When they met again, Liang Xu had become a renowned obstetrician.

"Hello, Doctor. I'd like to have a prenatal checkup."

A woman's gentle voice rang out.

Liang Xu looked up and saw Gu Jinnian beside her.

Then she looked at the woman and asked the usual question. "How many weeks pregnant are you?"

The woman smiled and stroked her belly. "Five weeks."

Liang Xu briskly filled out the examination form without looking away from the computer. "Pay on the second floor."

The woman stood up. When Liang Xu felt the gaze on her disappear, she let out a breath of relief.

She was wearing a mask, so he probably hadn't recognized her. And even if he had, so what? They had nothing to do with each other now, and he was here with a pregnant woman for a checkup.

After work, Liang Xu stood by the roadside waiting for her ride. A familiar license plate came into view: Jing A1111.

The window rolled down, revealing Gu Jinnian's cold profile. "Get in."

Liang Xu didn't move.

Gu Jinnian didn't rush her. "If you don't want your colleagues to find out, get in. I won't say it twice."

In the end, Liang Xu got into the car.

Once she was seated, Gu Jinnian spoke, his voice as cool and detached as ever.

"Liang Xu, I'm giving you a chance. Come back to me."
