Coming-of-age romance

-

The day Zhuang Yanrui was taken in by Shen Linjing, he learned that the old man who had adopted him, and who had been like family as they depended on each other, had passed away.

Back then, Shen Linjing was dressed in extravagant, tasteful clothes. As he looked down at Zhuang Yanrui, every gesture radiated the noble air of someone raised in luxury.

And Zhuang Yanrui was filthy and had gone three days without eating.

The awkwardness of living under someone else's roof left Zhuang Yanrui at a loss.

Various factions who coveted his metaphysical abilities were also watching him like hawks.

Zhuang Yanrui handled things as best he could, but ended up covered in bruises.

The fearsome uncle from the Shen family glanced at him.

"Who hit you? Don't bother me. Hit them back yourself."

Zhuang Yanrui nervously tugged at his clothes and asked cautiously, "Uncle, can I hit them however I want?"

Shen Linjing finally deigned to glance at the little nobody in his house, who had barely been noticed since moving in.

But his focus was clearly elsewhere. "What did you just call me? Uncle?"

Shen Linjing had always been arrogant and unruly in Huicheng. Smoking and drinking were part of his everyday life.

Until one day, he came home in the middle of the night after a night out and looked up to see a pair of glistening, grape-dark eyes staring at him from the stairs without blinking.

Shen Linjing could only snuff out the cigarette he'd just lit, his heart filling with irritation.

Tsk, he'd forgotten there was a troublesome little brat at home.

The kid was withdrawn, and Shen Linjing had no idea how to raise one. Whenever he got close, the kid would grow awkward in all sorts of ways, as if he were afraid of him.

Later, Shen Linjing accidentally stumbled upon Zhuang Yanrui telling someone's fortune.

He asked with interest, "How about you read mine, too?"

But Zhuang Yanrui blushed and ran off.

Later still, Shen Linjing finally found his chance to ask him in bed.

Zhuang Yanrui had no choice but to come clean.

"I already did. I've read your fortune many times. You're fated to be alone, and if you don't stay with me, you'll be a lonely old man."

"Liar." Shen Linjing held Zhuang Yanrui's hand and said with a smile, "I remember you said I had a lot of romantic luck at first."

Zhuang Yanrui looked at him calmly. "Mm. I snuffed it all out for you."

"Do fortune-tellers ever want to change their own fate?"

"No. I want to change someone else's."

[Everything in this world is bound by fate. Some people are each other's cause and effect, while others are destined to be entangled.]
