Mending a Broken Mirror

Mutual pining + groveling for forgiveness + rekindled romance + stoic, powerful official

On the day our marriage was decreed, I thought my secret love had finally been rewarded. Instead, he locked himself in his study for three days, hiding away all his swords and armor.

After we married, we treated each other with polite respect. Everyone envied my good fortune, but only I knew that Xie Zeyu had never had me in his heart.

A teasing commotion at the autumn hunt opened my eyes to the truth. My identity and our marriage were shackles keeping him from riding freely across the battlefield.

I stepped away and devoted myself to teaching young children, no longer a lovestruck fool who revolved around him.

But the man who had been cold to me for three years began acting strangely.

He would quietly shield me from trouble, awkwardly bring treats for the children, and even ask me with reddened eyes, "Huainan, do you not love me anymore?"

It wasn't until the Xie family's eldest brother returned that I learned the hidden truth behind the marriage decree, and the reasons for the hardship Xie Zeyu had silently endured for three years.

When he knelt on one knee and held out the armor he had kept sealed away, he said, "Huainan, for the rest of our lives, let me guard the borders for you and give you all my heart."

Only then did I understand that this secret love had belonged to both of us...
