Zhang Nisheng goes from wanting to resist to numb acceptance in just six months. He starts getting used to resting his chin lightly in Chou Quan's palm when he returns to their quarters, nuzzling against it with longing and adding, "You've worked hard, Major General."
The young major general always smiles, strokes his head, and bends down to whisper, "Thank goodness you're still here."

During his first month locked in a dark, dripping cage, he hates Chou Quan.
In the second month, he feels relieved.
In the third month, he starts missing his "home" aboard the fleet.
Half a year passes, and Zhang Nisheng admits that he misses Chou Quan.
Even in the darkness, the light finds its way in.
Zhang Nisheng looks up and sees the red-eyed major general standing in the light, reaching out to him and saying:
"You will be free."
