Her mother married into the Cong family as a second wife, hoping to enjoy a life of luxury. She was sent to the main family in her stepsister's place, where she would suffer.
The first time Cong Poli saw Chen Chen, the young man was tall and long-legged, surrounded by a crowd of rich young men and adored by everyone. A stream of Cong family's girls fawned over him, but he didn't even look at her.
From that day on, Cong Poli remembered where she wanted to go: the brightly lit No. 17 Club, where the parties went on day and night.
She saw Chen Chen at the opening ceremony two weeks later.
But it wasn't him giving the speech on behalf of the new students. It was his younger brother.
Chen Chen had been invited by the school to present the Outstanding Contribution Award. Everyone else who went up to accept it was highly accomplished. The award seemed to have been created just for him, to curry favor with the young master.
Cong Poli only learned later that his mother was on the school board.
He was the eldest son of the owner of No. 17 Club.

As an obscure figure sent to try her luck, she naturally had to win his favor if she wanted to join Congyun after graduation.
So it was only natural, if still unexpected, that she spent two years fooling around with Chen Chen and eventually ended up in bed with him.
After the scandal died down, she left just as she'd hoped to from the start. She knew life wouldn't be easy in a place full of unfamiliar faces, but Cong Poli wasn't sad. This was the life she'd always had... a life without Chen Chen's protection.
Until the car door rose. The person in her memory was still broad-shouldered and long-legged, his build every bit as impressive as the foreigners around him.
The wind lifted his slightly long hair, veiling his eyebrows. Cong Poli couldn't make out his face, but the agitation that had almost made her lose her temper just moments ago inexplicably faded.
She looked at the sky behind Chen Chen and realized for the first time just how blue the sky over Brussels was. It was so familiar, it reminded her of... the rooftop at high school.
It was a very similar shade of blue at twilight.
Cong Poli rested her wrist on her knee and lowered her head. She suddenly stumbled, but after regaining her balance, she kept reading. "Your fiancee is about to make a fool of herself."
Chen Chen glanced at her, then leaned back again.
The person who'd just caused trouble still looked perfectly harmless. He didn't respond to her comment.
Cong Poli finally raised her head and frowned at him.
"Li, if you get what you want, what's in it for me?"
The book finally closed. Cong Poli looked at the young man leaning against her right arm and said coolly, "What makes you so sure I'll get what I want?"
The wind was strong. Chen Chen's lazy air finally disappeared. He sat up and tucked her hair behind her ear.
"You will. I promise."
The young man's features were so captivating that Cong Poli was dazed for a moment.
How long had it really been?
Since she won the favor of the eldest young master of the Chen family, going from an obscure figure in a distant branch, sent here to try her luck, to someone with opportunities she'd never had before.
It had only been... since they met at seventeen.
