Every night, Wei Gu wants to kick that treacherous little man, Nian Bonan, out of her room.
It's not for any other reason. She simply can't stand how he torments her in every way once night falls. She can't even complain about it.
What occupies your thoughts by day will visit you in dreams by night. She dreams of herself sobbing, and the divorce letters she writes every day are piling up into a mountain.
How miserable. She can't go on living like this.
Her father is Grand Commandant of the Three Dukes, a trusted minister appointed by the late emperor to help guide the young emperor. The emperor respects him greatly, and no one at court dares cross him.
When she was young, she heard that a young man from a poor family had disagreed with her father. Protective of her father, she said in front of the guests at a banquet, "Hmph, I bet he'll bow his head and apologize to my father."
Everyone around her flattered her and echoed her words. They even spread them throughout the capital region, making it even harder for that poor-born gentleman to save face.
He said nothing in response. When a classmate brought it up, he only smiled faintly.
Later, that poor-born gentleman did not bow his head and apologize to her father. Instead, he rose rapidly through the ranks, won the emperor's favor, and became a censor.
Life went smoothly until the year she came of age. Her father was framed for plotting a rebellion, and the emperor, deeply disappointed, exiled him to a desolate, bitterly cold place.
The Wei family was stripped of its possessions.
Wei Gu thought no one would dare speak up for her father. She was prepared to be a poor little waif, waiting for her father to return and stand up for her again.
To her surprise, Nian Bonan, who had opposed her father at every turn and continued to impeach him even after becoming a censor, was not afraid to stick his neck out. He refused to kick his old enemy while he was down and even pleaded with the emperor on his behalf.
The emperor flew into a rage and married her off to him.
Wei Gu: Huh? What does any of this have to do with me?
Wei Gu married Nian Bonan full of resentment. She thought he was deliberately taking revenge on her, a petty old man.
Because of what she had done as a child, his family didn't like her much.
Whenever she appeared, conversations that had begun with laughter would fall silent. His whole family treated her coldly.
She didn't care. She was happy with it, actually.
What she did want to complain about was: could this old man Nian Bonan stay away during the day and at night, too?
Couldn't he be cold to her for once?
At last, one day, she was standing outside the door when she heard his mother say earnestly, "The Wei girl isn't suitable as your wife. She hasn't borne you a child, either. Let me find you a concubine."
Nian Bonan replied only, "Mother is right. I didn't consider it carefully enough."
Wei Gu couldn't keep the smile off her face. This was wonderful, she thought.
But that night, the old man still came to her room.
As she stared at him in astonishment, he undressed and said, "Mother is pressing us. We should have a child soon."
Wei Gu: ?
No, this isn't right.
