Lin Shanqing had a mottled spiritual root and insufficient talent. He was prepared to be rejected at the disciple selection ceremony, but You Yunqi, the master of Water's End Peak, chose him.
His master was strange. She was lazy all day, loved reading storybooks, loved arguing with people through jade pendants, and would occasionally point at the sky and curse furiously. But she was a good master.
She helped complete his spiritual root, taught him swordsmanship, and took him down the mountain for training...
Even when his furnace constitution was exposed and cultivators coveted him for it, his master simply drew her sword to protect him:
"I knew this villain would attract a whole crowd of red-name monsters. I've finally found an excuse to fight! You little miscreants, my bone sword has been thirsting for blood!"
His master was so good to him in every way, yet he had become a disciple who harbored such base thoughts about her...
--
You Yunqi declared herself the number-one cultivator in the world. With one sword she split the heavens, ended the demonic world's invasion, and kept her achievements a secret before retiring to a small sect.
Then she met a young version of the villain who would one day ignite the second great war between orthodox and demonic cultivators, and took him in as her disciple, not caring about the trouble he might cause.
Her fellow cultivators said being a master was hard. You Yunqi barely put in any effort, but fortunately, her disciple was diligent and self-disciplined, which made things much easier.
Her disciple wasn't that hard to raise after all.
All she had to do was feed him when he was hungry, give him clothes when he was cold, teach him sword moves, and give him the occasional present...
And if he wanted to become her Dao companion? Sure, sure!

Note:
1. This is a mountain of personal worldbuilding. I just wanted to write a lighthearted master-disciple story.
Theme: Sincerity in return for sincerity
