1. Xu Qingdai was born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. After her family fell on hard times, she was able to finish university only with someone's help.
When her benefactor died, they left a will stating that their wastrel son, Yan Xigui, had to marry Xu Qingdai and receive her consent before he could inherit the family's billions.
At the funeral, Xu Qingdai stood dressed in plain white, watching the playboy saunter slowly toward her.
"Marry me. I'll give you the money, paid upfront."
Xu Qingdai was as calm as still water. "Sure. No need to pay upfront."
His friends teased Yan Xigui. "Brother Yan, you're going to have to hurry home and take care of your lovely wife from now on."
Yan Xigui curled his lip and scoffed. "She'd have to be able to swallow that bitter Chinese medicine first."
2. A month later, Yan Xigui cornered Xu Qingdai and lazily pulled out his empty pockets. "Look, I've run out of money for food."
She smiled. "Work hard, and I can make an extra portion."
Yan Xigui gave his lips a slight lick. "Just a reminder: if I don't get the money, you won't get a single cent."
Xu Qingdai's eyes were cool and clear as water. "And here's a reminder for you: all it takes is a little Chinese medicine, and everything will be mine."
Yan Xigui composed himself. "I underestimated you."
He really had underestimated her. Xu Qingdai had known hardship, and whether it was bitter coptis or bitter sophora root, she could swallow it without even blinking.
3. A year later, Yan Xigui used a few tricks to free himself from Xu Qingdai's control and claim the inheritance.
Amid the bright lights and revelry, he saw Xu Qingdai walking toward him.
She was dressed in the same plain white clothes she'd worn when they first met. "Yan Xigui, settle the bill."
Yan Xigui looked at her from beneath lowered eyes. "No."
His softhearted friend said, "It's not right to skip out on the bill. She even became a divorcee because of you."
Xu Qingdai: "I'm leaving."
Yan Xigui blocked the door with his hands in his pockets. "Where are you going?"
A faint red mark appeared beneath her eye, and her lips trembled. "To find a lawyer..."
His heart hurt as if it were being torn apart. He gently brushed his fingertip beneath her eye, then lowered his head and bit her at the corner of her mouth. "Suing me? I'll go too. You drugged me and still think you can run away?"
*Marriage first, love later. Happy ending.
