Luo Yan picked up a whole person.

He was good-looking, but clearly had a screw loose. He insisted he'd come from more than thirteen hundred years ago, and that a tunnel-boring machine had shaken him awake.

He said phones were a thousand-mile communication device, cameras were mirrors that showed moving images, and AI was a magical artifact that knew everything. He even insisted that the reason she had such a short temper and kept a curved sword for cosplay at home was that she was the reincarnation of an Asura.

Luo Yan: He can say whatever he wants, as long as he doesn't howl on her balcony and scare the neighbors into having heart attacks.

But then this guy insisted on dragging her along to slay demons and vanquish evil, and even made her use her plastic sword.

Just let the world end.

The first time they met.

Crazy guy: Where's your sword?

Luo Yan, bewildered: Sword? What sword?

The crazy guy, very seriously: Every Asura has a flaming curved sword that never leaves their side, to slay evil spirits and fight bloody battles across the eight wildernesses...

His eyes fell on the plastic sword she'd used for cosplay, displayed on the cabinet.

He hurried over, lightly brushing a finger over the blade. His starry eyes narrowed. "So this is where it was."

They say that all beings suffer retribution for their evil deeds, and after death may fall into one of three realms, known as the Three Evil Paths: the hell realm, the hungry ghost realm, and the animal realm.

Those who fall into the hell realm are driven by anger, hatred, and brutality; those who fall into the hungry ghost realm are driven by greed; and those who fall into the animal realm are driven by ignorance, apathy, and blind obedience.

Some also say that Asuras, though able to tell right from wrong, lack compassion and are prone to anger and fighting. They are like gods, but not quite, and should also be counted among the evil paths.

But they don't know that these four evil paths can all be found among the living.
