Happiness in the Next Life

Nothing in the world leaves a deeper impression than death. It's just a shame that most people never get the chance to talk about it themselves.

She died once. The executioner passed along the killer's parting words: “Wishing you a pleasant next life.”

And so it came to pass. Another murder in a parallel world ushered her soul into this strange realm, where she opened her eyes to a new world and plunged into another raging tide of fate.

In a neon city where it rains all year round, skyscrapers glitter without pause, those at the top ruthlessly crush one another, and people with supernatural abilities fight to the death. A doomsday prophecy, which nobody ever asked to take part in, has begun its countdown.

“It's like showing up to a very formal, high-level meeting without knowing anything about it. You sit there feeling completely stifled, with no idea why you were sent there.

“When your turn comes, all you can do is toss out a couple of harmless jokes to show that you're just there to make up the numbers, and can't be held responsible.

“Unfortunately, nobody gets your humor. Not one person laughs. They all look serious and continue discussing and carrying out matters that will determine the future and the fate of the world.

“And you're left sitting there, restless and uneasy, watching a meteor fall beyond the huge windows as all life is laid to waste.”

“Can you put up with that?” He Lanzhi asked. “Because I can't.”

If I can't revise it in September, I can still revise it in October. This novel's style is basically as abstract as the blurb. The protagonist isn't all-knowing or all-powerful, and every character has their own position and motives. There's a fair amount of deception, betrayal, and exploitation, and love is often neither pure nor sincere. The one thing you can count on is that, in this chaotic world, He Lanzhi will always be herself.

Theme: Have a nice afterlife.
