Building an Agricultural Science and Technology Powerhouse for the Nation

Song Guyu thought she was going crazy. She touched the bag of corn seeds, and images appeared in her mind.

Germination, jointing, tasseling, grain filling: the entire process of a corn plant growing from the soil to maturity.

On the right side of the image was a string of stats.

[Drought resistance: C+, pest resistance: B-, expected yield: 141 kilograms per mu.]

The most unbelievable part was that she could drag the stats around.

She tried dragging drought resistance up one level. The corn in the image visibly grew shorter and sturdier, its roots reaching deeper into the soil.

Then the seeds in her hand grew slightly warm.

Song Guyu planted those seeds in her family's three mu of land. That summer, it went forty days without rain. All the seedlings in the village wilted, but her field stayed healthy, and the corn seemed to grow even better than in previous years.

When they harvested and weighed it, the yield was 263 kilograms per mu. The villagers said she'd gotten lucky and bought some good seeds.

People from the county agricultural technology station came to take a look. They said nothing and left with samples.

The following year, people came from the province.

The year after that, the visitors didn't say where they were from.

They brought a packet of seeds, saying it was a patented variety from a foreign company that had monopolized the market. They'd spent eight years researching it without figuring it out.

"Comrade Song, could you take a look at this?"

Song Guyu closed her hand around the seeds.

The stats panel appeared.

Song Guyu: "I can do more than just look. I can change them, too."

"Comrade Song, would you be willing to help us with our seeds? We're talking about more than one mu, or even three."

He raised his hand and swept it outward.

"We're talking about 1.8 billion mu."
