A Republican-Era Transmigration Story

After a string of rejected pitches, mocked livestreams, and bottom-ranked KPIs, publishing editor Yu Zhiheng finally collapsed at her desk late at night. When she woke up, she discovered she'd transmigrated to the first year of the Republic of China, an era of upheaval.

The New Culture Movement had just begun to catch fire, followed by the vernacular literature movement and a wave of intellectual awakening. The publishing industry and literary world were just getting started. She felt this was her chance to accomplish something great!

Fighting oppression, escaping an arranged marriage, making her way to Ningbo and then Shanghai, becoming a rising star in the literary world... The ambitions she hadn't managed to fulfill in another time and place could finally come true in this one.

Perhaps transmigration was a gift from fate.

But was it really a good thing?

As she faced the crashing waves surging toward the world, she saw the lights shining late into the night in the Shen Bao building, the cotton mills roaring with activity, trams crisscrossing the foreign concessions, and plague raging beneath the churches. Beneath the creases of all this prosperity lay a land riddled with wounds.
