The Legend of the White Eagle

I am Helan Zhen, the legitimate daughter of the Helan clan, married to Yuan Yu of the imperial family.

At the autumn hunt ceremony at Jiu Niao Terrace, a startled white falcon in the imperial gardens swooped down toward the throne.

Prince Xianyang Yuan Xi cried out for the emperor’s protection and pointed a cold blade at the falcon handler’s throat.

I stepped forward through the crowd and undid the white falcon’s golden chain myself. “The hunting falcon has lost its spirit. What has the handler done wrong?”

Under everyone’s gaze, the white falcon, a symbol of imperial authority, spread its wings and flew straight toward Mount Helan.

The emperor’s gaze was as cold as ice, but he only punished me by ordering me to copy scriptures under house arrest.

Three years later, beacons of war blazed across the Six Garrisons, and rebels broke through the gates of the palace in Pingcheng.

I pulled the hidden broken talon of the white falcon from the bottom of my dressing case.

A palace maid staggered in with the news: “Prince Xianyang tried to assassinate the emperor... Prince Pengcheng... has died too!”
